Get to Know Heather
I am a recent graduate of Arizona State University from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism with a focus in broadcast. I also received a concurrent bachelors degree in European History. While at ASU I interned within the field of broadcast journalism and also took several professional classes to advance my skills such as, Cronkite NewsWatch and Documentary.
I’m from Tempe, Arizona and am now living in the Big Apple, New York City. I lived in the Grand Canyon State my entire life where I attended Marcos de Niza High School. There I participated in many clubs and sports including the varsity swim team, theatre, DECA and Student Council. I also competed in our state DECA competition and was Homecoming Queen my senior year. After attending Arizona State University I decided to set my sights on the East Coast.
At ASU I really took advantage of all of the opportunities put before me and found things I really enjoyed that will stay with me for a lifetime. I was a part of Camp Kesem my junior and senior year, where I participated in fundraising and was a camp counselor for one week during the summer. I still try to stay active with the organization as an alumni as well. Being a camp counselor back-to-back years was a once in a lifetime experience to work with children whose parents have been affected by cancer. It was a great opportunity to help a community of children that may sometimes be overlooked. I was also on the ASU Women’s Rugby Football Club for two years, and continue to play with the alumni team. Throughout my years at ASU I maintained a high GPA, landing me regularly on the Dean’s List. In addition I had a part-time job to help pay for tuition and to pay for myself to study abroad.
I the summer of 2012 I studied in Cyprus for five weeks then traveled to Italy, Greece and briefly Ephesus in Turkey. This was an eye-opening experience, especially since I had always dreamed of being in the Mediterranean. I took a Greek language class, but would love the opportunity to put those skills to use more, especially since there aren't many Greek speakers in Tempe. The next summer I traveled with EF College Break to more than 9 different countries over the span of 25 days. Seeing a wide variety of countries in Europe really showed me how connected we all are globally especially in the age of social media. I also saw all of the opportunities that are out there all over the world, and I would love nothing more than to take advantage of that one day.
I graduated from ASU in May 2014, Cum Laude. I attended the Media Sales Institute put on by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation shortly after graduation; I couldn't have asked for a better and more beneficial opportunity. I was able to learn a completely different side of the media industry that I had never considered before. The skills that I took away will be beneficial in every aspect of media whether I decide to go in the direction of production, on-camera or media sales; this led me to be a Marketing and Client Solutions Intern at Cox Media in Phoenix Arizona.
Shortly after completing my internship with Cox Media Phoenix I moved to New York, where I now reside. Production and post-production work is where I have a true passion and I know New York is just the place to be. I hope to hone my skills in many aspects of the media industry so I can be an asset to wherever I work and whatever I do in the future.
